The Dreamtime exhibition at the MAN Museum explores Australian Aboriginal culture and the spiritual concept of ‘the Dreaming’. LS studio designed the exhibition’s visual identity, press kit and layout.

Billy Doolan, Takalaka (Serpent), 2004.

The exhibition project investigates the relationship between identity, land and art by examining ancestral stories. It showcases a variety of works, ranging from traditional bark paintings to contemporary creations.

The narrative explores the concept of ‘Dreamtime’ as an eternal present. These sacred stories continue to influence the landscape and the social identity of Aboriginal peoples.

The visual identity makes use of a striking typographic device based on the Gotham typeface, designed by Hoefler & Co (↗). The word ‘Dreamtime’ acts as a literal mask. It frames and reveals fragments of the artworks. This conceptual window has been applied to posters, billboards and invitations. It establishes a contemporary connection between viewers and ancestral textures.

The design avoids folkloric clichés by using letterforms to frame the artworks. The typography acts as a visual lens, isolating specific details of the Aboriginal paintings. Modern geometric clarity meets ancient narrative depth.
